This is a rather extensive topic and isn’t something I’d cover in one post (Since I know that most of you have the attention span of a puppy) so let’s start with sub-topic A
WHAT ISN’T ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Yea I know what most of you might be thinking. “counterintuitive much?”, and for those, my answer is…………………………………………….*drum rolls*................ you’re right. But hey, don’t leave just yet!
Anyway, let’s start by talking about businessmen, if you were to ever refer to an entrepreneur as a businessman it’d be akin to referring to anime as cartoon, Batman as superman, Engineering as science, you get the idea. BUSINESSMEN =/= ENTREPRENEURS. Here’s an example to make this clear. Steve Jobs, put a computer in everyone’s pockets. Entrepreneur. Lee Byung-Chul (Founder of Samsung) copied Apple, started an arms race in capitalism and as a result, got rich at other people’s expense. Businessman.
Which brings us to the first and most widespread misconception, entrepreneurship isn’t a way of minting money, and it does not mean running a business. Money is a consequence of a good entrepreneurial journey and not the other way around. If your interest in ‘entrepreneurship’ stems from a desire to make big bucks, there are many more, quicker and easier ways to get rich.
Lastly, if “flexible work hours”, “getting to boss people around”, “a ton of people working for you while you just sit back and relax”, and “everyone loves you”, are your ideas of entrepreneurship, you might as well stop reading because I have some bad news. Entrepreneurship does not automatically equal to you becoming your own boss, being badass and getting celebrity status. For much (read: all) of your entrepreneurial journey, you’d be hustling way more than a regular 9-5, you’ll be looked down on, you’ll be uncertain at every step, and you wouldn’t even be remotely rich. If you were to learn to live through this, fame, success and much of the Wolf of Wall Street fantasy would follow though not nearly as quickly as one would expect.
If you aren’t already turned off by these pipe bombs then good job! You qualify to read the next post, where we’d be looking at what an entrepreneur is, what entrepreneurship IS (and why it is important) and what my principal motivation behind starting this section is.
